These include incidents in academic and residential spaces, personal family concerns, and the safety of loved ones amidst current events. We understand these concerns are not new and resonate with complex global realities and personal histories.

Your safety and well-being are top priorities, and we are grateful for the engagement and diversity of our student body. To enhance transparency around our processes, we want to clarify how we handle reports related to social identity. When we receive such reports, our Social Identity Harm (SIH) Advocates work closely with affected students to provide direct support and resources. The Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA) Office may also conduct formal investigations where necessary. Our protocols balance accountability, safety, community standards, and freedom of expression.

Through our updated SIH process, we work to support affected students and, where appropriate, communicate the impact of specific actions to those involved. Our recent training in identifying and addressing antisemitism and Islamophobia has strengthened our responses, and we are committed to addressing each incident with care and centering the needs of those affected.

When incidents occur within a residential space, we communicate directly with the affected house or area rather than sending a campus-wide message. This approach respects the privacy of community members while ensuring specific support where it is needed most. We encourage responses centered on empathy and accountability, as taking ownership of one’s actions facilitates healing and fosters a safer environment for everyone.

Please remember that our affinity centers and staff are always available for connection, affirmation, and support. Finally, all departments reporting to Dean Alamo—from Campus Safety to Religious and Spiritual Life and Contemplative Practices to Restorative Practices—are here to listen, provide support, and address any concerns you may have. Student representation in the Vassar Student Association, the Committee on College Life, and the Committee on Health and Wellness significantly shape College policies and responses. We invite you to continue to engage with these avenues of engagement and to meet with any of us directly as we work together toward a community that upholds safety and support for all.

Warm regards,

Dean Carlos Alamo-Pastrana
Dean of the College

Dean Luis Jimenez Inoa
Associate Dean of the College for Student Living and Wellness

Dean Wendy Maragh Taylor
Associate Dean of the College for Student Growth and Engagement

Dear Vassar Community, In recent weeks, many of you have shared challenging and sometimes painful experiences.
