The Employer Relations team routinely works with employers to organize interview days (on-campus and virtual). Employers are invited to email <a href=\"mailto:hirevassar@vassar.edu\">hirevassar@vassar.edu<\/a> to get the conversation started or to request a \u201cSchedule\u201d through the Handshake \u201cInterviews\u201d module.\u00a0 For step-by-step instructions, please refer to Handshake\u2019s guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/support.joinhandshake.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/225537148-How-to-Request-an-Interview-Schedule-at-a-School\">How to Request an Interview Schedule at a School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Internship Standards &amp; Compensation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<details class=\"dropdownizer__dropdown\"><summary>\nWhat are some best practices related to designing a strong internship experience?\n<\/summary>\n<p>The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has a number of resources to support employers as they build internship programs, including their piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/talent-acquisition\/internships\/15-best-practices-for-internship-programs\/\">Best Practices for Internship Programs<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Furthermore, to ensure an experience meets eligibility for Vassar\u2019s Summer Internship Funding, we recommend:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Duration:<\/strong> 6+ weeks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time Commitment:<\/strong> At least 20 hours per week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supervision<\/strong>: Must have a designated supervisor who is a professional employee of the organization (not a family member).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nature of Work:<\/strong> Must be substantive professional work (internships with a primary focus on clerical or administrative tasks are generally ineligible for high-level fellowships like the Burnam).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Learning Goals<\/strong>: Identify clear goals for the internship that are based upon mutually agreed upon learning outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time for Reflection<\/strong>: Provide regular feedback to the student and encourage the student to reflect on their learning and experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n<details class=\"dropdownizer__dropdown\"><summary>\nShould I offer compensation for my internship?\n<\/summary>\n<p>Internships posted at Vassar can be paid or unpaid; however, Vassar strongly encourages employers to compensate interns to cultivate a more competitive applicant pool. Solely offering unpaid internships often excludes highly qualified students, as they may not be in a position to consider unpaid opportunities. Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/whd\/flsa\">Federal Labor Standards Act<\/a>, employees may not volunteer services to for-profit, private sector employers. For more information about the Department of Labor's criteria for unpaid internships, review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/about-us\/advocacy\/position-statements\/position-statement-us-internships\">NACE\u2019s position statement<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/whd\/fact-sheets\/71-flsa-internships#:~:text=To%20determine%20if%20an%20intern%20or%20student,entitled%20to%20minimum%20wage%20and%20overtime%20pay.\">DOL\u2019s primary beneficiary test for internships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Academic Credit at Vassar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<details class=\"dropdownizer__dropdown\"><summary>\nCan students receive academic credit for internships?\n<\/summary>\n<p>Yes. At Vassar, students can pursue academic credit for an internship through the <a href=\"https:\/\/offices.vassar.edu\/community-engaged-learning\/\">Office of Community-Engaged Learning<\/a> or by pursuing an Independent Work (298\/399) credit with a related academic department or program. If your organization requires that a student receive academic credit for an unpaid internship, we encourage you to include this language in your Handshake description:<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWhile this is an unpaid internship, [Organization Name] will provide the necessary documentation for the student to receive academic credit from Vassar College.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recruitment Policies &amp; Conduct<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<details class=\"dropdownizer__dropdown\"><summary>\nCan I hire international students for internships or full-time roles?&nbsp;\n<\/summary>\n<p>Yes! Vassar\u2019s international students are a vital part of our talent pool. Most are on F-1 visas, which allow for work authorization through CPT (Curricular Practical Training) for internships or OPT (Optional Practical Training) for post-graduation employment. There is typically no cost or significant paperwork for the employer to host an intern under CPT. For more specific details, the CCE can connect you with our <a href=\"https:\/\/offices.vassar.edu\/international-services\/\">Office of International Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n<details class=\"dropdownizer__dropdown\"><summary>\nWhat policies and ethical guidelines should employers follow when recruiting at Vassar?\n<\/summary>\n<p>Vassar College is committed to a fair and transparent recruiting process.
