The VSSP was\u00a0founded by Charles Steinhorn, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, in 2000.\u00a0 After\u00a0Professor Steinhorn retired in 2021,\u00a0\u00a0Adam Lowrance, Associate Professor of Mathematics, was appointed as the program director.\u00a0The VSSP\u00a0is funded by a generous gift by the late Vassar alumna, Elisabeth Petschek de\u00a0Picciotto, Class of 1950.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/offices.vassar.edu\/civic-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/02\/vssp-image-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/offices.vassar.edu\/civic-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/02\/vssp-image-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/offices.vassar.edu\/civic-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/02\/vssp-image-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/offices.vassar.edu\/civic-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/02\/vssp-image-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/offices.vassar.edu\/civic-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/02\/vssp-image-2.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Incoming VSSP students with Elisabeth Petschek de&nbsp;Picciotto&nbsp;\u201950, who endowed the program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Students can continue in the program throughout their high school career provided they attend the sessions faithfully. The program includes a Poughkeepsie High School science or mathematics teacher who coordinates the program at the high school, and in particular oversees the selection of new students. There also is a Vassar student intern who assists the faculty leading the Saturday sessions. The program concludes with a dinner at the end of each academic year to which the students' families, school and district officials, Vassar administrators, and local government officials are invited to attend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VSSP students pose with their participation certificates.
