The student has been taking care of their friend a lot and it is now impacting their own ability to focus, get their work done, etc and they are feeling stressed and overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Listen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Initiate conversation<ul><li>If the student expresses they are stressed, initiate by asking an open-ended question \u201chas anything been going on lately?\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Describe observations, express feelings<ul><li>\u201cI notice you seem unfocused.. stressed..\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Ask open questions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Provide empathy and validation<\/li><li>Normalize and reduce stigma<\/li><li>Ask what kind of support they would like (problem-solving, listening, referrals)<\/li><li>\u201cHow are you taking care of yourself?\u201d \u201cWho is your support system?\u201d \u201cWho are the people in your support system who are there for you?\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cThe best way to support others is by taking care of yourself.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s okay to step back.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Refer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Encourage the student to submit a Student Support Network (SSN) report about the friend (you can sit with them while they complete that report)<\/li><li><strong>** language to offer options: <\/strong>\u201cI am here to listen and I also understand if given my role you would prefer to talk to someone else about this topic (due to power dynamics, etc.) \u2026 What do you think?\u201d<\/li><li>Potentially offer resource connection\u2014you want to get them to the best possible support<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Considerations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Healthy boundaries and caring for self, watching to not get overinvolved<\/li><li>Explore support systems for the student, who is holding a lot<\/li><li>Make sure to check in in a few days<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\">.menu-item-974 { margin-top: 1em; }<\/style>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A student who works in your office is very worried about a close friend on campus who has been self-injuring and is not functioning well.
