Forces video embeds contained in dropdowns to have a size --><style>.dropdownizer__dropdown iframe { width: 100% !important; height: 100% !important; }<\/style>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Academic lectures supported by the Office of Dean of the Faculty Guidelines Fall 2026\/Spring 2027<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The overarching purpose of Dean-sponsored lectures is to promote a lively campus culture of intellectual and creative exchange featuring events that are appealing and accessible to a wide spectrum of the Vassar community. Highest priority for funding will go to events most in accord with this purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Email approval of funding from a member of the Dean of the Faculty office is required before making commitments to speakers or arrangements for publicity.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Guidelines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Dean\u2019s office supports <strong>12 lecture events per semester.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Dean\u2019s office will not support more than one event in a single day or more than two events in a single week.<br><br><strong>Considerations weighing in favor of a proposal:<\/strong><br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scholarly profile of proposed speaker<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Broad appeal and confirmed support from multiple co-sponsors (co-sponsor financial contribution is not necessary but is helpful)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opportunities for speaker to interact informally with students and faculty outside the immediate context of the lecture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fall proposals are due <strong>May 29, 2026 <\/strong>and Spring proposals are due <strong>November 6, 2026<\/strong><br><em>Proposals received on time will receive priority consideration. If slots remain available after these deadlines, they will be considered for the Fall until September 25, 2026 and for the Spring until February 19, 2027. These are firm deadlines.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Balance and equity - <em>Lectures funded by DoF, as a whole, should cover a wide range of disciplines and topics. Please note: Departments or programs with endowed lecture funds should draw on those funds before seeking additional funding from the DoF office.<\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In order to make funds available to the full range of departments and programs, DoF will not ordinarily sponsor more than two lectures from a single department per semester<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guidelines on honoraria:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For high-profile speakers who are represented by an agency and are expected to attract a large campus audience, the agency will set the fee, although this is often negotiable.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please note: These events typically require a speaker\u2019s agreement. Vassar has a standard <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/19rofAxWM79QaF-Y4Uko8adWpYFZV3fa6\/edit?usp=sharing&amp;ouid=107695072783663454601&amp;rtpof=true&amp;sd=true\">Speaker Agreement Contract<\/a> (DOCX - must be logged in to Vassar account to access). If the speaker or speaker agent prefers to use their own agreement, it will need to be reviewed by Vassar\u2019s General Counsel. Upon finalization, the agreement needs to be signed by the Dean or Associate Dean of the Faculty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For other speakers: ordinarily range from $300 to $2,000.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lodging and transportation:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transportation expenses include round-trip airfare, tolls, and ground transportation at current IRS Mileage rates (72.5 cents per mile for car).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lodging should be at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vassar.edu\/alums\/resources\/alumnae-house\/contact\/\">Alumnae House<\/a> at current rates (contact for pricing) or at the <a href=\"https:\/\/theheartwood.com\/\">Heartwood at Vassar<\/a> (contact for pricing).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hospitality may include modest meal expenses for the guest and selected members of the Vassar campus community. Gatherings should be small enough, generally up to six individuals, including the speaker, to allow everyone to interact informally with the guest. Suggested budget guidelines: $30 per person for lunches, $50 per person for dinners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lectures should ordinarily take place at 5:30 or 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at times with few or no conflicting or contiguous public events on the campus calendar.
