Internships at the Maria Mitchell Association
Through the generosity of Barbara Gibbins Duffy ’51, opportunities are available for Vassar students to spend 10–12 weeks this summer at the Maria Mitchell Association on Nantucket as a paid intern. Internships are available for Summer in the following areas: Environmental Education, Mitchell House Internship in Maria Mitchell’s childhood home, the Natural Science Museum, Astronomy and the Aquarium Internship.
Open to current sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Environmental Education Instructors
The Maria Mitchell Association, Nantucket’s Science Center, offers 13 Outdoor Science Educator positions for the summer. The Interns will gain valuable experience in natural science-based curriculum development and implementation, teaching a variety of topics, and working with children ages 4–14. Interns will also work in other aspects of the organization through assigned projects.
Applicants for environmental education instructor must be able to swim.
Historic House Museum Internship
The Mitchell House, a historic house museum, is pleased to announce the availability of one internship for the summer. This is a unique opportunity for those interested in a hands-on experience in the daily activities and running of a historic house museum. The Mitchell House has been a museum since 1903 and is one of the first historic house museums in the United States established to honor a woman. This internship is for those majoring in or who have a career interest in history, art history, museum studies, historic preservation or the conservation and restoration of decorative and fine arts.
The MMA is offering four positions in its Aquarium internship program during the summer. Interns are immersed in all aspects of operating a high-energy and very popular public aquarium and spend a majority of their time engaged in hands-on, outdoor education and animal care. The program gives interns valuable experience caring for marine vertebrates and invertebrates, interacting with visitors of all ages and leading outdoor education programs.
The ideal candidates have interest and experience with marine biology and environmental education. These internships offer a unique work opportunity for students interested in Marine Science as a career.
Natural Museum Science Internships
The MMA is offering two museum internships through its Natural Science Museum during the summer. The interns will gain valuable experience operating a small science museum, caring for biological collections, collecting data and organizing logistics for several research projects, assisting with educational programming, and learning about the plants, animals, birds and geology of Nantucket Island. These positions are fully immersed in the study of natural science and environmental education.
