This method can be taken up to five days after unprotected sex, however is most effective when used within 48 to 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. EC does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. EC can be used when a condom breaks, after a sexual assault, or any time unprotected sexual intercourse occurs. EC is not intended to be used as a primary method of contraception.
