Due to considerations for student health and safety, the Vassar College Policy on Student Travel prohibits College study abroad to locations with a U.S. State Department/United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) travel advisory of level 3 or above. Therefore, the current CDC global level 3 warning and Department of State global level 4 advisory preclude the operation of study abroad programming. In addition to these advisories, the following factors make study abroad for the fall 2020 semester unfeasible:

Unreliable access to evacuation services, due to in-country conditions and travel restrictions

Possibility of a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic

Potential in-country quarantine requirements

Uncertainties of future conditions/health care systems and facilities in various countries

Disruptions to the academic integrity of programs

Impact upon quality of cultural immersion including loss of residential and host family interactions

Significant delays in passport/visa processing

Travel restrictions in and out of various countries

While this was a difficult decision, we considered information from many resources very carefully, consulting not only with advisory information but with external expert resources and peer institutions as well. We believe that making this decision now is important for providing ample time for students and faculty advisors to work together to adjust academic plans to the greatest extent possible.

Vassar remains committed to global learning and we hope to be able to resume study abroad in the Spring 2021 semester, if conditions have improved sufficiently. We will continue to monitor public health conditions and official travel advisories, and we will maintain regular correspondence with our global study abroad partners as we all assess the feasibility of resuming study abroad programming.

The Office of International Programs will follow up directly with all students who had been planning to study abroad this fall. Please visit the COVID-19 section of the Office of International Programs’ study abroad FAQs page for more information.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Office of International Programs at internationalprograms@vassar.edu.

Sincerely,

William Hoynes
Dean of the Faculty

https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/be635ec26808920b3b2972aa31df8f4d90446f0ff287f57764f40d7fe5d9db1f?s=512&d=mm&r=g
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/be635ec26808920b3b2972aa31df8f4d90446f0ff287f57764f40d7fe5d9db1f?s=512&d=mm&r=g
https://offices.vassar.edu/international-services/?p=364
https://offices.vassar.edu/international-services/2019/12/09/how-vassar-sees-the-world-annual-international-photo-contest-winners-announced/
How Vassar Sees the World: Annual International Photo Contest Winners Announced
<!-- Inserted by Dropdownizer plugin. And when they return, they invariably observe that they have been transformed by the journey. “It is hard to articulate the experience,” says Melanie Lai Wai ’16, a mathematics and Chinese double major from Mauritius. “We all experienced many emotions while we were there. We saw extreme poverty and sadness but also enormous joy.”

Meade and the students began the trip in the capital city of Port au Prince, purchasing works of art and handmade crafts from local galleries and from the artists themselves. Members of the Vassar Haiti Project re-sell the art and crafts at Vassar and other venues in the United States to fund the college’s ongoing work in Haiti. “We needed to buy a lot of art on this trip because we had particularly successful sales recently in Washington, DC, and in Sag Harbor, NY,” Meade says.

After three days in Port au Prince, the students visited Croix de Bouquets, a small community where artists create large iron sculptures. They purchased several of them and arranged to have them shipped back to Vassar for re-sale. From there, they made the trek in the Gros Morne region to Chermaitre, the site of the clinic that Vassar has established.

Students watch a demonstration by an iron sculptor in Croix de Bouquets.

While they were at the clinic, two men arrived, carrying a nine-year-old boy on a wooden door. The boy was suffering from cholera and was extremely dehydrated, Meade says. The boy was given fluids intravenously, and Meade and the clinic’s staff arranged for him to be transported to a hospital about 20 miles away. “That was a powerful experience for all of us, seeing someone in such distress and watching as he was helped at the clinic,” Meade recalls. “Had the clinic not been there, the boy almost certainly would have died.”

Paarul Sinha ’17, the only student on the trip who had been to Haiti previously, said the incident at the clinic had demonstrated to her that “the facilities there are providing tangible and much needed care, but, clearly, more needs to be done through our partnership to ensure the clinic is fully equipped to care for all of its patients.”

From the clinic, the students trekked up a steep mountain to the school where more than 250 children attend first- through sixth-grade classes. The Vassar Haiti Project has also recently funded a water filtration system at the school, which many villagers travel to and rely on for clean water.

The students also checked the progress of one of the Haiti Project’s more recent initiatives, a reforestation project that provides incentives to farmers who plant cedar, oak, and fruit trees on their land to help retain prevent soil erosion. About 500 families are taking part in the planting of more than 13,000 seedlings through an $8,000 grant, Meade says. He notes that the project embodies one of the principal goals of the Haiti Project: “It’s good to observe, but sooner or later you have to take tangible action but only as a partner. Buy-in is key; we are their guests, not their bosses.”

Playing a game with some of the children at the school in the village of Chermaitre

The final stop on the trip was the budding tourist community of Hinche, where the students toured waterfalls and caves that still contain etchings of the indigenous people who were slaughtered when the French invaded the island nearly 400 years ago. There are four parts to the series: Europe, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, and Asia. Europe and Africa are presented in the Fall semester, while Latin America/Caribbean are presented in the Spring semester. With trivia and discussion, the goal is to open the minds of students to cultures that they may be interested in or maybe had no prior knowledge of.

Another part to this series is to allow internationals from the region presented to celebrate their culture and share thier narratives with others in a safe place. Many internationals on campus experience feelings of being homesick at one time or the other. The ATW series allows at very least a handful of internationals to look back at theirs at home and invite people into their vision of what home means and represents.

In an effort to share the cultures of the various international students on Vassar's campus, the Office of International Services (with support from Office of Campus Life and Diversity) present the Around the World series. Join us on March 2nd to partake in Latin American/Caribbean foods and music, and join in on a discussion headed by international student ambassadors hailing from the region.

March 2nd, CCMPR, 3-5pm. Open to any and all students!

Posted on Thursday, February 18, 2016

https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/be635ec26808920b3b2972aa31df8f4d90446f0ff287f57764f40d7fe5d9db1f?s=512&d=mm&r=g
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/be635ec26808920b3b2972aa31df8f4d90446f0ff287f57764f40d7fe5d9db1f?s=512&d=mm&r=g
admin
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/6027a0d308294dc71252942e85c4c34391bc217d71895e1f81e30829feff2bcf?s=512&d=mm&r=g"}}
