Accessibility and Educational Opportunity

Vassar College

Recognizing the diversity and individualized needs of Vassar’s student population in the context of the college’s commitment to inclusion, the Office for Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (AEO) provides support and resources for students diagnosed with learning differences.

These include ADHD, psychological disorders, chronic health conditions, mobility or orthopedic impairments, sensory loss, and substance abuse/recovery needs. The office coordinates accommodations for academic courses, residential life, meal plans, college-sponsored extracurricular activities, and college jobs.

Our Commitment

Vassar College is committed to providing accessible and inclusive learning and living environment for students with learning differences, psychological disorders, chronic health impairments, mobility or orthopedic impairments, sensory impairments, and substance abuse/recovery needs. The Office for Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (formerly Disability and Support Services) was established in 1996 to provide support and resources for these students including coordinating accommodations for academic courses, residential life, meal plans, college-sponsored extracurricular activities, and college jobs.

Federal laws that protect individuals with disabilities govern much of what we do. However, we approach our work with students and all accommodation decisions with the understanding that alternate methods of carrying out a given task or having modifications made to one’s living or learning environment are often necessary in order for students diagnosed with learning differences or other impairments to have equal access and opportunity. Our goal is for every student to achieve the highest standards of academic excellence, reach their personal goals, and maintain their personal integrity and independence. Please download the AEO Student Handbook for more information about the accommodation process at Vassar.

The Office for Accessibility and Educational Opportunity also provides consultation to Vassar faculty, administrators and staff regarding disability-related workplace accommodations, and sponsors workshops and lectures to promote greater awareness and understanding of disability issues within our community. Students with temporary impairments should also contact the office to learn about available support services.
