Graduation Requirements
Vassar adopted the Vassar Intensive and Experiential Work curriculum in July 2019, which went into effect for the 2019/20 academic year. These “Intensives” course offerings provide increased opportunities for students to work closely with faculty in teaching and learning opportunities that are different from traditional classes.
- Minimum total of 32.0 units earned.
- Minimum total of 16 units OUTSIDE the major field of concentration. Units earned from Advanced Placement exams and other exam-based units do not count towards this requirement.
- Minimum of 8 units OUTSIDE the curricular division of the major field of concentration. Consult the Vassar College Catalogue online for a list of Curricular Divisions and their major fields. Units earned from Advanced Placement exams and other exam-based units do not count towards this requirement.
- Maximum of 5.0 units of ungraded work. For transfer students, this limit is reduced by 1 unit for each year of advanced standing awarded to the student. Students who exceed this limit will need to exceed the 32.0 total units by the same amount.
- Maximum of 4.0 units of work under the Non-Recorded Option (NRO). For transfer students, this limit is reduced by 1 unit for each year of advanced standing awarded to the student.
- Maximum of 2.0 units of physical education. Students who exceed this limit will need to exceed the 32.0 total units by the same amount.
- General education requirements:
- First-year Writing Seminar: 1 unit
- Quantitative Analysis: 1 unit
- Foreign Language Proficiency: 2 units at the beginner level or 1 unit at the intermediate or higher level
- Limit on transfer units for courses taken at institutions other than Vassar, as well as any pre-matriculation units for AP, IB, or other exam-based units.
- For students starting as first-years:
- Maximum total of 9.0 transfer units
- Maximum total of 6.0 pre-matriculation transfer units
- Maximum total of 2.0 exam-based pre-matriculation transfer units
- For transfer students:
- Maximum total of 16.0 transfer units
- Maximum total of 2.0 exam-based pre-matriculation transfer units
