FLI Mentorship Program

Overview

The FLI Mentorship Program is the intentional pairing of a FLI student with a Vassar employee in order to establish a mentoring relationship that will provide the student with the opportunity to realize both professional and personal goals. This relationship provides FLI students with additional support and guidance, and connects them to resources. It is established through a series of on-going informal and formal interactions throughout the academic school year.

Commitments/Responsibilities

What responsibilities do Mentors have?

  • Meet monthly with your Scholar(s). During these initial meetings, you should be discussing what both you and your Scholar would like to get out of this program; set goals; and talk about how each of you would like to reach out to one another and stay in contact.
  • Attend a Wisdom Dinner once a semester. This may be one of the monthly meet ups with your Scholar(s).
  • The monthly meet ups can be over a meal, coffee/tea, attending a program, or at other campus locations/events.
  • Check-in with Scholar(s) throughout the semester to answer questions, address concerns, and provide feedback/guidance to your Scholar(s).
  • Although not a requirement, you can organize and put on a program with your Scholar(s).
  • Establish open communication and talk about experiences.
  • Share resources and ideas with your Scholar.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with, and provide assistance and support to Scholar(s).
  • Recognize significant events in each other’s lives (ex: birthday’s, performances, games, etc.).

A Guide for Scholars

What Scholars Are Saying About the FLI Mentorship Program

“I think the biggest point of growth for me was realizing I am capable of doing things I didn't think I was able to, and I feel more welcome at Vassar than I have in the past by a long shot.”

“FLI Mentorship Program has been one of the best experiences at Vassar yet. My mentor has been able to help me personally in many ways and I've had a great time with my mentor.”

“I really liked having someone, besides family members, to check up on me and care about my wellbeing.”

“Meeting with my mentor was very helpful because we can have causal conversations, and I can also ask questions and get support. I feel more comfortable asking for help because we have a relationship outside of just advising.”
