Faculty Learning Communities
Faculty Learning Community (FLC) Overview
The Faculty Learning Community (FLC) program is intended to bring together a small group of faculty to read a book about a topic related to evidence-based inclusive pedagogy and try out related practices in their respective teaching environments. FLC participants deepen their knowledge and expertise in the chosen topic through collective reflection and mutual support throughout the semester.
The FLC group is expected to meet about 4-5 times over the course of the semester (ideally in person), to be scheduled as a group. In addition to the shared learning about the topic, FLC members work on implementing what they learn to improve a specific course or program and ultimately share their knowledge at the end of the program by creating a resource to be shared with the wider Vassar community.
Spring 2026: Sparking Joy in Our Teaching

The topic of our upcoming FLC in Spring 2026 will be Sparking Joy in Our Teaching. Using the newly published book, Joy-Centered Pedagogy in Higher Education: Uplifting Teaching and Learning for All (Routledge, 2025), we will explore joy as an essential source of abundance and vitality that we can intentionally cultivate in the classroom to activate resilience, engagement, and community. (Participants will be provided with the FLC reading material.)
Past FLCs
Last year’s Faculty Learning Community (Spring 2025) focused on ways to implement “small teaching” strategies that make a big impact in the classroom. Check out our Teaching Tip on “Small Teaching” Strategies to Improve Student Learning.
