Close, careful reading is an act of respect and shared commitment to nuanced understanding.

Reading rhetorically helps us develop patience and perseverance, consider opposing viewpoints, reconsider certainty, and embrace complexity.

Rhetorical Awareness: We guide students to develop careful and critical reading practices for understanding and engaging the ideas of others. We model close-reading strategies for identifying and analyzing the rhetorical techniques authors use as reasoning and evidence for their assertions.

Read with us: Active reading is the first step in a writing process that involves grappling with and responding to the ideas of others. Writing Center consultants are available to read alongside you, pose interpretive questions, negotiate meaning, and discuss possible responses to both argument-driven and creative writing.
