Spring Workshop Series

Title VI issues rarely arrive with a drumroll. They usually start as “everyday moments” that feel minor in isolation: a joke in a hallway, a meme in a group chat, a comment in class, a themed party flyer, a “just asking questions” post online.

This session helps participants spot where bias and discrimination can hide in plain sight, especially around race, color, national origin, shared ancestry/ethnic characteristics, and accent or language-based targeting. Participants work through short scenarios to sort: protected expression, harmful behavior, and actionable harassment under Title VI, with a focus on impact, context, and patterns over time. The session also builds practical bystander skills. Participants practice interrupting harm without escalating conflict or becoming “the next target,” using short scripts and low-risk strategies that fit real campus life. We conclude by outlining what to document, what to report, and how to support people who are harmed, particularly during high-visibility cultural moments such as Black History Month.

Consent is simple on paper and complicated in the places students actually live: hallways, parties, late-night texts, relationships, breakups, and the fuzzy social weather of “are we okay?” This workshop translates policy into real conversations using quick scenario polls, pause-and-rewind role plays, and boundary-language practice that works in the moment, not just in a handbook.

Because this runs in March (Women’s History Month), the session also identifies the broader arc: consent is not merely a compliance concept. It is a daily practice of autonomy, respect, and shared responsibility, particularly in cultures where social pressure, gender expectations, and power imbalances can distort what constitutes “choice.” Participants will practice concrete language for checking in, setting limits, and responding when something feels off, with special focus on how alcohol/ impairment, ambiguity, and status or authority can blur communication and decision-making.

Most bystanders aren’t “in charge,” but they are in the moment. This workshop develops practical, realistic bystander responses for both consent concerns and bias incidents, using the 5 Ds: Distract, Direct, Delegate, Document, Delay. Participants practice quick interventions in common campus settings: parties, residence halls, classrooms, student org meetings, and online spaces.

The session emphasizes three core skills: (1) choosing the safest strategy based on power dynamics and urgency, (2) using short scripts that reduce harm without escalating risk, and (3) knowing where and how to refer concerns and support impacted individuals without investigating or promising outcomes.

Tailored Workshops

The Office for Institutional Equity Team and our community partners are available to provide in-person training to students, administrators, staff, or faculty. Workshops (online and in person) are interactive, providing participants with opportunities to engage in discussion and activities that challenge existing perspectives while understanding those that differ. This interactive format enhances learning and promotes a deeper understanding of the topics covered.

Our training and education programs are not one-size-fits-all. We work to understand the unique needs of each unit, department, or group, and we are ready to tailor our offerings to meet those needs. One of our most requested training topics is an overview of Vassar’s nondiscrimination, Title IX, and related gender-based discrimination and sexual violence policies. Training programs equip our campus community with the knowledge and understanding necessary to navigate these policies effectively, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all. Topics covered include definitions of prohibited conduct, consent, supportive measures available to complainants and respondents, resolution options (administrative, informal, and formal), responsibilities of designated reporters, how to respond to disclosures, reporting options, and resources on- and off-campus.

For further information or to schedule a program for your department or group, please contact the Office for Institutional Equity.

Online Interactive Courses for Students and Employees

The online training modules are self-paced and ask students and employees to think critically about how to keep our campus safe. They cover such topics as identities and inclusion, sexual harassment prevention, sexual assault and violence prevention, hazing, alcohol education, and mental health. They encourage all members to look out for each other and about what each of us can do to contribute to our goal of a campus free of harassment, discrimination, sexual assault, hazing, and alcohol/substance abuse.
