  • Of survey participants, trans men, trans women, genderqueer, or gender-nonconforming students, and cis women reported the highest rates of nonconsensual sexual penetration during within the previous academic year at Vassar.

  • Rates of nonconsensual sexual contact in the last year at Vassar & class year:
    • First Years - 13.3%
      • First year students are most at risk.
    • Sophomores - 14.9%
    • Juniors - 10.3%

  • SAVP Student reporting:
    • During 2015-2016, there were 70 reports made to a Vassar survivor advocate.
    • During 2016-2017, there were 60 reports made to a Vassar survivor advocate. 
    • Students are most likely to first tell their friend, family member, or intimate partner about their assault.
  • Title IX Student reporting:
    • From January 2016-December 2017, 94 cases were reported and 5 cases were referred to a hearing.
    • In 4 out of 5 cases (80%), the accused was found responsible.
    • In 3 out of 4 cases (75%) in which the accused was found responsible, the accused was suspended or expelled. 
  • Victim/survivors typically know their perpetrator.
  • Sexual assaults typically happen on campus in residential houses.
  • Alcohol was involved in 78% of cases.
  • Of those that indicated experiencing a sexual assault, 3% filed a formal complaint with the Title IX Office.
  • Students are utilizing SAVP and SART! 

Sexual Assault and Rape on College Campuses

  • One in six female college students reported having been a victim of rape or attempted rape during the preceding year.
  • One in six men report being sexually assaulted before the age of 18.
  • 85% of rapes on campus are acquaintance rapes.
  • 27% of women have experienced a rape or attempted rape since age 14.
  • The majority of reported victims and offenders are college age, with the rape victimization highest among 16-19 year olds.
  • Only 27% of the women whose sexual assault met the legal definition of rape thought of themselves as rape victims.
  • 42% of college women who are raped tell no one about their assault.
  • 42% of the women who were raped said they had sex again with the men who assaulted them.
  • 42% of raped women said they expect to be raped again.
  • 84% of college men who committed rape said that what they did was definitely not rape.
  • 55% of the men who raped said they had sex again with their victims.
  • One in 15 male students reported committing a rape or attempting to commit rape during the preceding year.
  • Nearly one third of college men said they were likely to have sex with an unwilling partner if they thought they could get away with it.

Reporting statistics

  • 5% of college women who are raped report the rape to the police.
  • 5% of college women who are raped seek help at a rape crisis center.
