Budget Sheet and Considerations

Overseas Vassar-sponsored and non-Vassar-sponsored approved programs:

All students receiving financial aid will be required to complete a Study Away Budget sheet online. This worksheet determines the financial aid expense budget of your program. The expense budget will include the following costs:

1. Vassar College tuition.
2. Expense for room and board during academic program not to exceed the cost of room and board if the student remained at Vassar for the term or terms of study away.  Provide documentation regarding costs.
3. Round trip transportation by the most economical means, if not included in the tuition or program fee. Students are asked to use www.kayak.com or comparable websites to find the lowest cost airfares. Open-ended tickets will not be approved.
4. Additional travel allowance from home to departure site if the place of departure is not in the student’s home state.
5. A standard allowance for books and personal expenses to include the cost of the visa (if needed), which is not to exceed the standard allowance for books and personal expenses if the student remained at Vassar for the term or academic year.
6. An allowance towards Vassar’s health insurance plan if the student has elected to purchase the plan (most overseas programs require health insurance coverage). The cost of student health insurance up to the cost of the Vassar health insurance plan (students are encouraged to participate in the Vassar health insurance plan).

The following expenses will not be included in the expense budget:

1. Optional in-country travel before or after the academic period or during breaks.
2. Housing and food costs if you arrive before the program begins, during semester breaks, and if you remain after the program ends.
3. Housing and food costs in excess of Vassar’s allocation for room and board.
4. The cost of obtaining immunizations, a passport, or other special documents such as an International Student Identity Card.
5. Special or additional clothing.
6. Cost for books, materials, and VISA expenses in excess of the standard budget amount.
7. Expenses for gifts, phone calls, laundry, etc. in excess of the standard budget amount provided as part of books, personal, and VISA expense allowance.

For approved domestic study away programs:

This budget worksheet determines the financial aid expense budget of your program. The expense budget will include the following costs:

1. Direct costs for tuition and fees charged to the student.
2. Cost for room and board not to exceed Vassar’s cost for room and board.
3. Round trip transportation by the most economical means.
4. Standard allowance for books and personal expenses not to exceed the allowance provided by Vassar for books and personal expenses if you remained at Vassar for the term or academic year.
5. The cost of student health insurance up to the cost of the Vassar health insurance plan (students are encouraged to participate in the Vassar health insurance plan.)*

* For Dartmouth exchange, the cost of Dartmouth’s health insurance fee will be covered in the budget.
